Villa district of contrasts: the Pratercottage
Created as a meadow area on the edge of the Prater, a walk through the Pratercottage in Leopoldstadt reveals the contrasts of an upper middle-class society that could not be more drastic.
How the physiologist Eugen Steinach tried to discover eternal life, where Egon Schiele moved into his first studio at the age of 17, where the first court officials learned to ride a bicycle and where Marianne Golz became the Righteous Among the Nations.
Let’s take a look behind the facades of spectacular fin de siècle villas with their eventful history and fascinating protagonists.
The Tour
To begin we explore luxurious rental villas for the Jewish upper middle class and gain an overview of the contrasting lives of their residents throughout the eventful history of the 20th century.
On our tour we meet outstanding personalities from the fields of art, medicine, science, politics and business. We review the secret operations of the Austrian resistance during the NAZI era, are guests of the toad-kisser Paul Kammerer and his widowed lover Alma Mahler and remember voyeuristic excesses in the Tiergarten am Schüttel.
Finally we expolore the unique clubhouse of today’s SV Schwarz-Blau, history of the development of Art Nouveau in Vienna and the beginning of cycling in Austria.
Quality is my highest priority and therefore the tours always take place target group oriented and in a relaxed atmosphere!
Hint: bring your camera
